Marrying the Hangman is loosely based around a bizarre happening in 18th century Montreal. In 1751, a woman named Francoise Laurent was convicted of stealing gloves from the wife of her employer, and sentenced to hang. At that time, a man condemned to death could escape by becoming the hangman, a woman by marrying the hangman. Desperate in her cell, Francoise finds a chink in the wall leading to Jean, a young soldier serving a light sentence for wounding another man in a duel. Whispering through the hole, Francoise manages to convince a man whose own life is safe, a man who has never seen her, to save her from her fate. Through the figure of this dangerous and imperiled storyteller, Marrying the Hangman touches on fear, faith, seduction, the physical and imaginative power of words, and the nature of performance itself.
This new work by Stranger Theatre combines a narrative built around a fractured, non-linear timeframe, physical images, and a text which shifts between humour, poetry and the macabre. We will show the piece in a workshop presentation at Hub 14 in Toronto June 5, 6 and 7th. Please come and tell us what you think.
